Vancouver has the fourth highest population density in North America and it’s the only city not to have a major highway stabbing its core. It’s a city of neighbourhoods and space is at a premium. It doesn’t matter how eco-friendly your car is, there’s simply limited space for these large devices. Since the 90s, car ownership in the city and the average distance driven has been declining, this is the only Canadian city seeing a decline. The fastest growing transportation mode in Vancouver today is cycling, so much so that I’ve even seen horses take up the lifestyle. This is what happens when cities commit to prioritizing walking and cycling first before any other mode. Get with it.

To create a comprehensive cycling culture in an urban environment involves not only physical infrastructure - of which citizens fight to get for sometimes as long as decades- but it also involves comprehensive education through schools. Places such as Portland and Copenhagen actually have reserved curriculum that teach and test kids on how to properly ride a bike. Imagine that. It’s like leading a horse to water AND teaching it how to drink. Cities cannot rely on just the ‘build it and they will come’ attitude if they’re expecting a viable alternative transportation option. Vancouver has it really really good, but there’s still work to be done.

Did you know Portland, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, and Vancouver all have comparable temperatures and rainfall amounts? There’s no such thing as bad weather just bad clothing and cycling isn’t a season, it’s a lifestyle.

To me, one of the coolest things about #yvr is that you can be in the middle of nowhere but still be in the middle of everything. From this fjord, I could see my school and the hill I live on. But yet, paddle all day heading north and you’re completely alone with the milky way, seals, eagles, and the rest of nature. But then you can still get home for sushi night. #vancouverisawesome #locationlocationlocation

This is me with LA gear high-tops, MC hammer pants, and a bad attitude. This photo slide is dated Sept 20, 1992. I got this bike for my 5th birthday. I still remember what it felt like. Street kids are becoming an extinct species, sadly. We need streets where kids can develop their life skills. Biking is a life skill that prevents illness, congestion, debt, stress, and more. You take away an animal’s habitat and they go extinct. Create safe streets and you’ll have healthy kids that grow into healthy adults.

Would’ve stayed here all day if I hadn’t needed to cycle to work later. Nearly got to the Facebook friend stage with a pair of resident eagles. I think they liked me.
